The University of Texas at Brownsville-Texas Southmost College, abbreviated UTB-TSC, is an educational institution located in Brownsville, Texas, on the land once occupied by Fort Brown. It is a member of the University of Texas System. The institution was formed from a partnership between Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas-Pan American at Brownsville. It is designed in such a way that a student can achieve various levels of certification and/or degrees without having to enroll at two separate institutions, making the transition from survey courses to degree courses seamless.

History

Texas Southmost College

Texas Southmost College, or TSC was established in 1926 under the name "The Junior College of the Lower Rio Grande Valley." It admitted its first class on September 21st of that same year. In 1931, its name was changed to "Brownsville Junior College." In 1950, the institution was given its current name.

University of Texas-Pan American at Brownsville

In 1973, Texas Southmost College formed a partnership with Edinburg-based Pan-American University, which is now known as The University of Texas-Pan American. This partnership entitled Texas Southmost College to issue Bachelor's degrees and conduct graduate courses for the first time. The resulting independent instution was referred to as Pan American University at Brownsville. In 1989, Pan American University joined the University of Texas System, and thus renamed its Brownsville satellite, The University of Texas-Pan American at Brownsville.

University of Texas at Brownsville-Texas Southmost College

In 1991, The University of Texas-Pan American at Brownsville changed its name to The University of Texas at Brownsville (abbreviated UTB), after terminating ties with the Edinburg campus. On September 1, 1991, The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College formed a partnership, establishing the current institution. Both entities are currently led by president, Dr. Juliet V. Garcia. and occupy the same landspace. The University boasted enrollment of 11,000 students as of Spring 2004.
