The University of Vermont is a university in Burlington, Vermont. The University of Vermont was chartered in 1791 at the impetus of Ira Allen, originally under the name "University of the Green Mountain" or in Latin Universitas Viridis Montis, hence the initialism UVM. Vermont Agricultural College was chartered November 22, 1864, subsequent to the Land-Grant College Act, and merged with the University in 1865 when insufficient funds were raised to open the College as an independent institution. The official name of the combined entity has been The University of Vermont and State Agricultural College ever since. Unsurprisingly, UVM is known for its programs in agriculture and life sciences.

Bachelors, master's, and doctoral programs are offered through the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education and Social Services, the College of Engineering and Mathematics, the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the Graduate College, the School of Business Administration, and the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources.

The University of Vermont campus is located in Burlington between Colchester Avenue to the north, East Avenue to the east, South Prospect Street to the west, and Main Street (to Williston Road) traversing the center of the campus.

The school's sports teams are called the Catamounts and the school colors are green & gold. They participate in the NCAA's Division I and in the America East Conference. The University of Vermont has not had a football program since 1974. The hockey team is slated to join Hockey East in 2005. The men's basketball team defeated Syracuse University in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament, earning their first tournament victory ever.
