Uran

Uran is a township near Mumbai in Maharashtra in India. Uran is part of the New Bombay city township. It lies in the district of Raigad. Situated east of Bombay across the Thane Creek, Uran is primarily a fishing village developed into a small town.

Location

Uran faces the south Bombay region. A ferry ride of around 45 minutes takes you to the port of Mora, built in 1896. A couple of kilometres inside, lies the town centre. The town is well connected to Bombay by road. Sea travel to Bombay is unpredictable, largely depending on the tides. Just north of Uran lies the international ports of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Nhava Sheva , which are run by India’s central government. The townships of Panvel and Belapur are the nearest towns to Uran.

Problems

Uran has a naval base near Mora. Locals claim that the base has stifled the growth of the town due to sea travel restrictions imposed by the navy.

The main town is extremely congested with narrow roads filled with potholes. Besides the navy, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has a refinery out there. The outskirts of the town is largely rural, and remains one of the few places within the New Bombay city limits, untouched by the modernity around it.
