dog agility
did you know the pictures in Dog Agilty don't show? Ensiform 04:05, 10 Feb 2004 (UTC) Fixed. Elf 05:48, 17 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Newfoundland
Hi Elf. I filled in the rest of the table on Newfoundland (dog) as you hadn't got round to it :) - hope that's OK with you. I don't know if you saw my reply on my talk page, let me know if you want a copy of my list of breeds. Regards -- sannse 00:33, 17 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Names of dogs
Hi Elf, I don't think we should have dog's names under their photos. I think it doesn't look as professional. I've tended to keep the dog's names to the image description pages - that way they are still available but not part of the article. What do you think? -- sannse (talk) 16:56, 9 Mar 2004 (UTC)
OK, I can live with that. Elf 17:00, 9 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Photos--of borzoi and others
Hi, I think it's fine that you replaced my picture of the Borzoi. Maybe you can also help to identify the dog pictures on List_of_dog_breeds so they can be moved to the different articles on those breeds. They really shouldn't be on the main dog breed page. However, since I wasn't a 100% sure that I identified those pictures correctly, I put them on List_of_dog_breeds. Cheers, Jurriaan 07:00, 13 Mar 2004 (UTC)
US registries
Hi Elf, was it the United Kennel Club that you thought we should include on the tables? I know little about the US registries so just went for the AKC. I've also found pages for the Continental Kennel Club, the National Kennel Club and the Dog Registry of America. I don't think we should have all of them in the table, but am not sure which are important enough to include. Are there others too? Regards -- sannse (talk) 19:42, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Well, huh, I've never heard of the others you mentioned but UKC is probably 2nd to AKC. Yeah, AKC is the most major one, so I agree let's not add the others to the table after all. I'll see what I can find out about the various ones & maybe come up with some standard verbiage. Elf | Talk 05:06, 28 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- What I've found out so far: UKC respected as a registry & definitely a legit organization, although there's some suspicion why people with AKC-recognized breeds would register w/UKC. Some excellent reasons; some bad reasons. National Dog Registry is for tattoos. Continental Kennel Club and National Kennel Club are "for puppy mills". Elf | Talk 20:34, 29 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Belgian shepherd dogs
Thank for the info about Belgian Shepherd Dogs. I wasn't sure the best way to handle them. I'll split the articles up and make a disambiguation page when I get a chance.
Regarding images, I got them from a person's personal web site, who didn't list copyright info or say where the images originally came from. Do you think that's okay?
Kelpie layout
Hi Elf, I hope you had fun. I've done my homework ;) I've also fiddled a little with one of your images, just to get the layout a bit better on the article. Feel free to revert if you don't like it (you'll probably have to force a refresh to see the difference). Talk later -- sannse (talk) 11:58, 24 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Thanks, Elf!/Q&A for dogs?
For welcoming me to the Dog Project. I'm having fun, but still have lots of learning to do.
I have another few comments/questions and I'll put them on the questions page--one of them--there are a couple if I can remember correctly. Perhaps it would be an idea if we had ONE place for dog project contributors to ask-n-answer and resolve issues? Quill 20:28, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Which category?/Dog breeding
Sorry, Elf, I've lost the page where you were starting to talk about your new categories page. I wanted to check back to see if we had a consensus.
I've just created a new article on Dog breeding. Now, where should I list it? Quill 23:45, 20 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- It was the talk page for List of dog topics. Good start on dog breeding. For the moment, I'd put a link to your new article on that page and also add it to Category:Dogs. Elf | Talk 00:21, 21 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Brittany weaned vs whelped.
DOH! Yes, thank you! Can't really do much training right after a dog is whelped. Your other edits really improved the article.Wcrowe 13:56, 3 Jul 2004 (UTC)
the NKC
I know the NKC isn't the most highly regarded of kennel clubs, but i hold it dear, since it's creation was basically so that the American Pit Bull Terrier could be registered (since the AKC doesnt), and the APBT is my breed. Lachatdelarue 19:39, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)
i retract my former statements
i take back what i've said about the NKC (especially in regards to APBT's). i was terribly confused and had mixed up the NKC with the UKC (which was formed to register the founders pit bull). i don't know how this got crossed in my head, but it did. i don't know anything about the NKC. Lachatdelarue 17:35, 31 Jul 2004 (UTC)
a question about the CKC...
where can I find a list of the CKC registered breeds? Lachatdelarue 02:02, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Hi, excuse me for jumping in. I'm presuming you mean the Canadian Kennel Club rather than the Continental? There is a list on their web site [1] but it's not easy to find. Click on the "featured breed", then on "back to breed histories". I can't be more specific that that because they have done something fancy with the site that is preventing me seeing an accurate address! This lists 162 breeds (which doesn't include the miscellaneous class)
- There is also a list at http://www.dogsincanada.com/breeds/aagroups.html But this lists only 154 breeds plus 19 in the miscellaneous class. I wrote to the CKC and got a list of 164 plus 29 from the miscellaneous class. I haven't sat and cross-referenced the lists, so I'm not sure where exactly the discrepancies are. I've tended to go with the e-mailed list in the belief that is likely to be the most complete. I'd be happy to forward a copy to you if it is of any help -- sannse (talk) 19:07, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)
A suggestion--re dog show
How about... moving Dog show to Conformation show, merging in the text from conformation point and making that a redirect, and changing the links to conformation? Just a thought :) -- sannse (talk) 10:33, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Hmm, I'm trying to think along those lines. I think that's not quite it yet, because "dog show" is by far the most common phrase used by most people, excepting breed people when they're talking about such a show to other knowledgable people, in which case it's often just "conformation"--but I think to laypeople they'd also say "dog show". But maybe your suggestion is a good one. I'll let it rattle around in my head a while longer. Thanks! Elf | Talk 16:24, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
A humble request--mutt article up for FAC
Mutt (dog) is up for featured status at wp:fac. To my eyes, it seems incredibly short, but I don't know if there's anything else that should be written. Could you take a look and give your opinion as to whether it needs expansion? Best wishes, Meelar (talk) 13:01, 2004 Aug 16 (UTC)
- Oh, that was you with the 'major edit' notice, eh? I've just had a look and posted some comments on the discussion page. I'll go back and look again to see if I notice anything else from your last set of edits.Quill 23:55, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Dog chariot
Thanks for your response about finding my Dog chariot Carnival photos. Alas, the photos are a bit too blury, which I'm sure is why I wound up not using them in the article. This was one of the strange events that can be seen on the streets during New Orleans Mardi Gras. Some people put a good bit of effort into the day's performance art. The dogs seemed in a good mood as they pulled the happy charioteers through the streets at a good trot. I got two quick snapshots before they disappeared around a corner-- one of those things I might not otherwise have been sure I saw. :-) Cheers, -- Infrogmation 04:39, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)
no edit conflict intended
Are you working on Mutt now? If so, I'll back off. Quill 01:44, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Okay, edits at Mutt plus strikeout (with comments) as you suggest on the featured article page. I'll be around for the next 36 hours or so, then away for a couple of days. Quill 02:06, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Fox Terrier photos
Didn't mean to have two of MFT 'Lucky'. It was right at the beginning; din't know what I was doing. The photo at the article is properly credited; the other one can be deleted.
I'll look into changing the licenses. Some of those are famous dogs, so I'm not sure. It's a bit hard for me to argue; I don't really believe in free license in this instance. Will f/u and let you know. Quill 22:45, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Corgi
I think all this paranoia about photo sourcing is quite unnecessary. I've been a journalist for many years, and my experience is that only photos anyone cares about are (a) current news photos ripped off from media websites (b) fashion photography and similar "designer" photos (c) "art" photos by big-name photographers. Everything else is junk and no-one cares about it after a few years. A 35-year-old publicity photo of HM comes under the junk category. Adam 00:30, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)
MINPINS!
Hey, I saw what you did with my Miniature Pinscher stub. I couldn't figure out how to get that table in there! How did you do that? Also, I want to post an image of the Minpin, Pavlov, that lives beneath me. He a little chubby, but very cute. What do I do? THX! Roodog2k 00:38, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Australian Cattle Dogs
I see what you mean about the ACD page. I've got some images I want to upload, and I've actually fought off my "male" tendencies and read the instructions, but I'm still confused about how to upload images. If I'm working on my own personal webpage, I ftp the files into a particular directory, write the html to point to it, and there you are. How does that work in a Wiki context? Thanks for any help you can give. Jimhutchins 01:57, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)

vizslas
i just discovered that both the "hungarian vizsla" and the "hungarian wirehaired vizsla" are on the dog breed list, but that the wirehaired page redirects to the other one. so, which one is the more appropriate name to be used in the list? Lachatdelarue (talk) 03:58, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- you know, i should really do some looking for myself before i ask questions... all of the alt. names redirect to hungarian vizsla, so i'm going to remove the wirehaired link from the list. Lachatdelarue (talk) 04:02, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Actually the CKC and The KC both recognize them as separate breeds, so they shd probably both remain on the list. The redirect is probably a work-around until someone wants to write up a real article. Or to discuss them both in the same article as is done for, say, Dachshunds. Elf | Talk 04:03, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)
ok, i reverted the breed list back (i had removed the link right before you responded) and made a slight edit to the hungarian vizsla page. Lachatdelarue (talk) 04:14, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Pekeapoo
Nope, the pekeapoo in the photo died back in the early '80s. I wouldn't object to a clearer shot of another one though. - Hephaestos|§ 07:24, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Siberian Husky Page
I liked your edit on the "coat" section. I am casanova btw, just changed my username. I think if your going to divide the line between racing siberians and show pets, that you should include something regarding Seppalla Siberian Sleddogs, because there is supposed to be no true difference in regards to Siberians for the ring and Siberians on the trail, the Conformance in the ring is meant to provide the best working dog outside the ring, and as we all know this is not the case however, I think that a truer version of this would be the Seppalla dogs that are being bred for the purpose of pure racing. pit bull pic
The picture you put on the pit bull article is an APBT. Do you mind if I use it on the APBT article? And if I put it on the breed article, should we use the same pic on the pit bull article? Lachatdelarue (talk) 23:33, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for your help, I obviously rushed too much in creating the article. I don't suppose you know anyone who'd have a photo for it? Mel "MelSkunk" Smith 05:55, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Re: secret identity Thank you for the complement, and I only wish! No, no, I'm a newbie in that I've never had anything to contribute on a large scale before, so never bothered registering. My longest update before this was a paragraph of history on a now defunct SF convention! But it did take me about three hours to get all the information organized for the article and I'm glad it shows. Mel "MelSkunk" Smith 06:03, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Second opinion
Hi Elf. Could I have your opinion on a couple of images?
| and |
I think the second is more pleasing, but wonder if you think the colours on that one are too bright to be realistic? What do you think? Thanks -- sannse (talk) 16:39, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- The second is definitely better. I have the same trouble when I'm photoshopping photos--I ask it for an automated adjustment and it goes way far away from anything i would have chosen, and it takes me a while to look at it and decide that I'm just *used* to looking at the original one but in fact the corrected one is much better. Purebred
A dialog has started at Talk:Purebred about the most logical use of this page. Deleting the Cat section and leaving only the dogs is probably not appropriate since this should logically be a disambig page. At any rate, it needs to not ignore all the other "purebred" species and just talk about dogs. Pschemp 01:24, 28 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Galgo Espanol
Hi. I thought Wikipedia:List of images/Nature/Animals/Dogs was your page, since I recognized a lot of the dog photos. Good work. I found the image using google image search, and noticed that the second entry was from Wikipedia. I also had my try with Image:Pekeapoo.jpeg, and uploaded the new image over the old one. See the history of the image for comparison (and don't forget to CTRL reload to see the new image). BTW, I am using the GIMP, which is almost as good as photoshop, but free. Give it a try -- Chris 73 Talk 23:32, Sep 28, 2004 (UTC)
Hovawart
Hiya! As an annoying hobby, I'm keeping an eye open for copyvios. I noticed Hovawart and decided to defer to you a bit (since you've been here longer and are obviously up on doggy sources.) This one's word for word from dogbreedinfo.com; is there anything unusual here that would indicate it's NOT a copyvio? --jpgordon {talk} 18:47, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Dog communication article
I started working on this article a while ago, then lost steam. I'm not sure how detailed to make it, since going into full detail would make it a book, and too little obviously wouldn't get the point across. - Thank you! It was not so easy because the page was moved while I was editing: 1 , 2 . I want to make is: and ro: soon. What do you think about:
- main InterWiki's? Would you make one for the categories, needs translations, (... whatever else ...)?
- You know I liked to add new / missing categories (Dog breeds, Dog types, Dogs, Canines) in other languages and link them together. I taught that I would have a benefit from the three of life and categorisation. But there are lots of things to do. See . I think at some point in time "all articles showing the wolf pictures will be linked together": is a wolf not a dog. Regards Gangleri 11:44, 2004 Oct 26 (UTC)
Image:Berry & brandy.jpg
Hi elf. A new user has uploaded an image for his personal photo album. The album was deleted, but maybe we can use the dog picture. Since you're the local dog-expert, do you recognize/can use the dog in Image:Berry & brandy.jpg? Currently it is listed on Wikipedia:Images for deletion. Elf, The link to Ace the Batdog on the German Shepherd Dog page has been deleted twice and added yet again. The editor who is adding the link has not replied to the comments on the talk page. re: shepherd and dog
I just sent an email to ceciasia.org asking about their photo policy and mentioning my interest in using that particular image on Wikipedia. I am new at this so I will read more carefully about the GNU Free Documentation License and take the photo down if I can’t find clearly that it is alright to be using it. Please feel free to take it down earlier if you think it should be. Thanks for checking with me on it. --Jjhake 21:46, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

pit bull image
Old photo is non-commercial only, page explicitly states not to use non-commercial only photos. New photo is GFDL. :) --Dante Alighieri | Talk 01:38, Nov 23, 2004 (UTC)
- It's a grey area, to be sure. But having to contact someone before commercial use is in violation of the GFDL. That section of the Wikipedia is explicitly for free images only. I'm interpreting this to mean GFDL. If you want to put it back, I'm not gonna argue with you and start an edit war, I just think that it's pretty unnecessary seeing as how we have ANOTHER photo of a pit bull under the GFDL. Also, don't forget that when you contact someone to get permission for commercial use, they can say "no". :) That's assuming that you can even get in touch with the copyright owner. Therefore, the safest thing is to assume that permission will NOT be given and thus commercial use is prohibited. --Dante Alighieri | Talk 22:15, Nov 23, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Elf. Blaikiewell Animal Sanctuary provides some free photos of various kinds of dogs, cats, and other animals. I thought you might be interested. crossing Chihuahua and Great Dane
This is a serious question. Has anyone attempted to cross a Chihuahua with a large dog, like a Great Dane? What would the resulting dog look like, if the Chihuahua is the mother, or if the Great Dane is the mother?
- I don't know whether anyone has ever tried it. If the Chihuahua were the mother, it would most likely have to happen by artificial insemination. In that same situation, it's possible that the puppy(ies) could be large enough to endanger the mother's health during pregnancy. So all around, that division of motherhood & fatherhood would be a bad idea to try. If the Dane were the mother, the Chihuahua could probably get her pregnant without any assistance. :-) In all animals, offspring tend to average towards the mean. So my best guess is that the average size of the offspring would be probably about halfway between mom & dad. Because they'd be closer to normal-sized dogs, they probably wouldn't have the bugged-out eyes of a Chihuahua (which happens because that breed has normal-sized eyes in a teeny head), and they might not have the hip problems that a lot of the giant breeds have. Neither breed has any dwarfism or abnormal shortening of the muzzle, so they'd probably look like "normal" dogs proportionally.
- Both breeds are short-haired breeds, so the offspring would probably also be short-haired. The color could be anything--mixed-breed dogs are most commonly black or tan or black-backed with tan underneath, but they could be anything, and both breeds come in a variety of colors, which could be represented by recessive genes in both parents no matter what color they are, so it's impossible to predict--litter could, and probably would, have puppies with a mix of coat colors and patterns.
- Now, all those educated guesses aside, I don't know why anyone would want to make such a mating deliberately--one would be better off, if one wanted a midsized mixed-breed dog, finding a couple of midsized dogs to breed, or adopting one from a shelter or rescue group. :-)

Weird juju -- Belgian Malinois
I didn't move it - I just reverted Neutrality's text changes. So your move back from Belgian Malinois to Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois) was the only one after Neut's move. This problem is that moves are currently not very well documented - once you moved it back, Neutrality's original move no longer shows up. I didn't even notice that bit of what he'd done to be honest - I just saw the text changes and fixed. Glad you caught the move -- sannse (talk) 19:49, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)
