User talk:Jmabel

As of April 4 2005, for the next few months I will be less available to Wikipedia than I have been for the last year or so: I have a large writing project to do professionally, and I'll probably only be able to give Wikipedia 15-20 hours a week.

Do feel free to drop me a note on this page if there is something to call to my attention (in fact, that would be welcome, because I will not be monitoring my watchlist as much as in the past), but it may be several days before I see it. -- Jmabel | Talk 17:21, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)

Baltasar Gracián

Thanks for pointing out my mistake, and the proper avenue for incorporating foreign language material. -- Morning star | Talk 01:29, Mar 22, 2005 (UTC)

I do plan to work on it. I didn't mean to obligate anyone else, but thought others (perhaps more capable) might take a crack at it. -- Morning star | Talk 02:26, Mar 22, 2005 (UTC)

About San Marcos

Regardless of the name of the University (Saint Mark or San Marcos) I wish that you could help me dealing with the grammatic mistakes of the article. It is really messy (I, myself have difficulties for reading it) and I really wish that an arrange can be made. The information Itself its not a problem, just the way that its expressed. Please, take a look and add all the mistakes on the talk page. National_University_of_San_Marcos I would gladly recieve any help. Messhermit 04:02, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

New York

Oh yes. I see I didn't ever transfer the sources from the main article way back when. Thanks for pointing that out. -- Decumanus 06:08, 2005 Mar 23 (UTC)

Tibetan people

Do you have any clues about the sources about the images of the Tibetan people? It has no information about the source of the images for more than one year, and images without information should be deleted if lied docile for too long.

Did you ever go to Tibet? If you have, do you have any images of any Tibetan individuals? I think that new images should be replaced, as these old images do not have any information concerning their sources. Can fair-use images be deleted so as to achieve 1.0? (See the rules here. Wikipedia:Pushing to 1.0)

I also feel that this article has a potential to achieve a near-featured article standard, and cleaning up is needed. I do not intend stubborness, but I think that the paragraphs in the customs should be broken up as it looks neater. Gramatical errors are important to be corrected, as a viewed that at least 35% of the wikipedians have poor grammar standard. Even I, do have some grammar defects.

Let's join forces to construct this article into the 1.0 standard.

Mr Tan, 18:09, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I did. As I've told you, they have the [unverified] tag being placed up, and it has been more than one year since the person uploaded it. Images like these should be deleted if lie docile for too long. If you are an admin, I don't know about their tasks, but you may either delete them off or request for deletion.

also, I also seek foward to the future of working with you. In the case of any help needed, do come and approach me.

Thanks and Bye.

Spam?

Hi Jmabel — could I just get a quick second opinion on whether you think these contributions by count as spam? I've reverted them all, but have since recieved several angry messages and emails saying they ought not be counted as spam (and, oddly, calling me a Communist). If you have a moment, I'd appreciate an opinion.
Thanks! — Asbestos | Talk 10:48, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • Of course. Absolutely spam, and commercial spam at that. Not even in a gray zone. -- Jmabel | Talk 15:43, Mar 29, 2005 (UTC)

Anarcho-capitalist critique of left-anarchism

Could you please delete this page in accordance with the unanimous vote on its VfD page?--Che y Marijuana 10:10, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)

The wiki tells me "Can't delete this article because it contains new block-compressed revisions, which are not supported by the new selective undelete feature and could result in data loss if deletion and undeletion happened. This is a temporary situation which the developers are well aware of, and should be fixed within a month or two. Please mark the page for deletion, protect the page and wait for a software update to allow normal deletion. If there is an actual complaint from a copyright holder or other suitable legal complaint and they are unwilling to accept page blanking and protection as a temporary measure, please ask a developer for assistance." I recommend you blank it, except for a note explaining the situation. -- Jmabel | Talk 17:17, Mar 30, 2005 (UTC)

Merge some redundant lists to categories

In response to:

Phil, I understand that you are not advocating turning all lists into categories, but I believe that if you look at the discussion that has gone by, you are wrong in claiming that no one is advocating that. In fact, it seems to me that quite a few people are advocating it.

Perhaps, but that's a ridiculous idea that's completely beyond anything I ever proposed, so I have good reason to treat it dismissively. Philwelch 01:12, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Certainly, but not to deny that anyone is proposing it, which is what a recent remark of yours claimed. We both agree that it's a bad idea, but that doesn't mean we should say no one is proposing this bad idea. -- Jmabel | Talk 01:21, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)

Peretz Hirshbein

Hi! Thanks for the note on Hirshbein. I understand your concerns and I will also see that Hirshbein in catagorized in the Yiddish Theater category. As it is, I've taken to redoing the theatre categories and I'm classifying playwrights by nationality in terms of those playwrights born in the country and also playwrights who do the majority of their work in said country. I believe there is a Yiddish Theatre category and add Hirshbein, but if not I will see that one is created as I know there are a great many very well written entries on the subject. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to address them on my talk page. Thanks! Ganymead 07:33, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

My plan is to create a catagory for dramatists and playwrights by ethnicity. This would include only playwrights that are associated with specific types of ethnic or minority theatre such as Yiddish and Hebrew Theatre (as it is, I plan on separating these), African-American Theatre, or Gay and Lesbian Theatre. Indeed, Yiddish dramatists such as Goldfaden and Hirshbein will also be catagorized as directors or musical theatre lyricists. As it is, I don't believe that theatre directors or lyricists will be large enough to have to break down into smaller catagories. I don't pretend to know loads about Yiddish theatre and your input has been very helpful! Ganymead 08:20, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
One other note, I just realized after looking at your main page that it was you who had written many of the wonderful pages on Yiddish theatre! Thanks! The theatre entries as a whole on Wikipedia are rather poor except for Yiddish Theatre, English Restoration Theatre and Shakespeare. Your contributions have helped tremendously! I will certainly add your pages to my reading list. Ganymead 08:31, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Walker reference - an overdue response

Wow. This note is long overdue. I was looking over my talk page and came across your question about my deletion of the reference to Walker's effort to reclaim "negress." I seem to recall going back to the article at some time in the past and seeing the restoration of that paragraph and agreeing with it, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't in response to your note. Back then, I was in the habit of ignoring that orange message banner for a time, because it just never seemed to disappear. I'm not sure I ever read it. If I did, I was probably crunching a deadline, set aside a response and never got back to it. My apologies. (Is there a special trick to making that banner go away? It's really annoying sometimes!)

Anyway, I just returned to the article (again) to see if I could figure out how that happened, and as near as I can figure, I was probably reading too quickly (skimming, actually -- terrible, I know!) and simply skipped over the preceding, 2-line paragraph. (My bad.) Until I just googled her, I was unfamiliar with Walker's art, so it didn't ring any bells -- and reclaiming "Negro" (as it read without the preceding paragraph) was just weird. (Actually, I remember thinking "absurd".) I am familiar with works like The Good Negress, though, and of course would have agreed and probably added that author's name (which escapes me at the moment) had I read the last two paragraphs more closely.

Hope that answers your question. Peace. deeceevoice 08:26, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I don't see "My Authentic Negro Experience" as an attempt to "reclaim" the word. Use of it to characterize a particular period in history or mind-set isn't quite the same. Frankly (and thankfully :-p), I don't see anyone reclaiming that one! I feel somewhat differently about "negress" and use it often facetiously myself. From what little I've seen online, Walker isn't quite my cup of tea, though. I prefer Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden, even Alma Thomas -- a lot more color and vibrance.

Gee, thanks. I appreciate your comments about my "forbearance." Yep. People often mistake my relentlessness, plainspokenness/directness and sometimes passion for hostility. I guess the archetype of the evil, ball-busting, black b**** is truly alive and well here. It's good to know even some white folks (like you) notice just how off-the-wall a lot of our fellow, white Wikipedians are. I find their racism, ignorance, obstructionism and just plain obtuseness on matters dealing with race, ethnicity and racism is pervasive and systemic. When I'm not being the Omarosa-in-residence (:p) here in the virtual world, I don't deal with that mind-set at all. I tend to eschew such contact in the real world; I really do have better things to do with my time! But some of the stuff I've read on Wikipedia simply shouldn't be in print anywhere -- and certainly not as any kind of authoritative source of information on the race. This place can be truly appalling in that regard. It needs more contributors of color, particularly black folks who aren't confused or self-loathing accommodationist, assimilationist knee-grows. (That may sound strident/judgmental, but it's not meant to be; such labels are merely a rather unfortunate-sounding shorthand for certain even more unfortunate pathologies.) But Wikipedia isn't exactly the kind of site that attracts such people -- and it most certainly is not the kind of site that is likely to retain any in significant numbers for very long.

But when Wikipedia is good, it's really good. And the quirky mix of people and individual interests is a reminder of just how different our experiences are, how varied, how diverse. The place is dynamic. And I've encountered some truly decent, well-meaning people here, as well. Not enough to stop me from pausing each time before I click the Wiki icon on my web brower, but I've determined to stay as long as my patience will permit.

Good luck on the archiving of talk:African American. I'm glad someone has the patience for it!

Peace 2 u. :) deeceevoice 23:05, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • Yep. I would imagine Seattle is full of Lawrence's work. I checked out the ethnic groups project -- and whose name did I find? JCarriker, a member I had a run-in with only a couple of days ago. Another one of those people who took a misunderstanding and ran with it -- in this case, straight to the Wareware RfC page. Completely unwarranted and unpardonable. Because his talk page was automatically on my watchlist, I noticed he's already archived our exchange. Guess he's not too proud of it -- but too proud to remove his unfair reference to our dispute from his comments on the RfC. So-ooo typical. Hi Joe, see Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion#April 1 [2] to delete Image:Shark Palestine Caricature.jpg [3] This highly offensive anti-Israel "caricature" spoofing Jaws that depicts the POV that Israel is the the aggressive "shark" and that the Palestinians are poor little innocent "victims". JCarriker

I don't know if you've read our exchange in its entirety, but as far as I'm concerned this guy was dead wrong from the start. He jumped the gun in taking offense and then took his idiotic assumptions to the RfC page. There was absolutely no reason for him to refer to our exchange at all in the RfC -- for precisely the reasons I've mentioned. He can say that's what his intent was, but I don't buy it. Nor is his intention clear in his remarks in the RfC -- because I don't believe that's what motivated him. His remarks regarding the Afrophobia exchange have been disingenuous (essentially, "you're another one"). I don't see any reason for you to get involved in this thing, either, though I appreciate your good intentions. But what do you mean you don't want to get involved in the Afrophobia thing? Your communication is precisely what you're doing. To treat Carriker's comments in the RfC is to get involved in it. You wouldn't have responded as you did, otherwise. I see nothing but ego at work here on his part, and as far as I'm concerned, he can go to hell. deeceevoice 06:02, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Interesting Idea to achieve compromise on AF article

Also, I was going to ask you something about the AF article:

Do you think that the Privatisations and all the economic info should be stated on a separated article that can deal with the Economy of Peru? I mean, I believe that is important that relevant info must remain in AF page, but a much more detailled discussion can be created to disscussed more accurately? Please, give me your opinion. Thanks Messhermit 05:02, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I agree with you. They should be statedin AF page, and another article should then take the led and analized in much more detail. What about creating an article call Privatisations on Peru to deal with it? Also, with Viajero's Help, the article Economy of Peru could be expanded to state this. Thanks. I learned about it via a mailing list. Indeed, it has still not yet been confirmed via other sources. Either the next of kin are keeping quiet until after the funeral or it is a hoax. I guess we will know within a day or two. To be quite honest, it never occurred to me that it might be spurious. Twice before I learned via mailing lists about the deaths of two notable lefties, David Dellinger and William Hinton, a couple of days before the news hit the MSM, and I amended the articles here accordingly without it being an issue. -- Viajero 16:17, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

In November 2003, there was a VfD debate over Sunset High School (Portland). The debate was archived under Talk:Sunset High School (Portland). I am writing to you because you have participated in such debates before. Merging Converso and Marrano articles

Hi Joe: Even though the brief article about Conversos makes them appear to be different to the Marranos, the latter article which is much more comprenhensive does not seem to differentiate between these two groups really. If that is so, I think that the Converso article should be merged with, and redirected to the Marrano article. Thanks for reviewing these two articles. IZAK 08:59, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

That's not true. Converso includes Muslims. If they were to be merged, the specific term should be merged into the general one. Also, converso is preferable to marrano because the former is neutral whilst the latter means "swine", i.e. it's rather anti-Semitic. In fact, don't let SlimVirgin see Marrano; she'll probably Vfd it as part of her crusade.  :) — Helpful Dave 09:14, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hi Dave, I'm not sure what is "not true" here. All I am stating is that if you read the Marrano article you will see it talks in terms of the Conversos being Marranos too. I know what the word "Marrano" means, but to historians (Jewish and general) it is a neutral term -- because it was used for hundreds of years -- and if you "cut it out" you are in effect "editing" history which is of course both ridiculous and self-defeating. I don't really pay much heed to political correctness and revisionism, but I am on good terms with SlimVirgin and hope to keep it that way...hope to... Thanks for the input. Now, what does Joe think? IZAK 09:47, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Joe will no doubt answer soon, but in the meantime, I'll respond. The Marrano article defines marranos as Jewish conversos. I've just done a quick word-search on the article, and neither "Islam" nor "Muslim" occur in the text, so I don't know what you mean by "if you read the Marrano article you will see it talks in terms of the Conversos [including Muslims] being Marranos too." Also, I didn't say we should "cut out" the use of the term "marrano" from history, but that some might find it offensive as a page title. I've seen examples of other stuff being deleted because Jewish wikipedians didn't like the title.  :) — Helpful Dave 10:15, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm going to put in a brief mention of their history in the introduction, but if you, or someone else wants to tweak or expand that section, please do. --Kieran 11:55, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Ah, never mind. I got carried away and expanded and rearranged the introduction. Feel free to peer review. --Kieran 12:03, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Romanian sanaty check request

Could you have a look at Template:User ro-1 for me? My romanian is about 6-7 years rusty, and I was never too good writing things without awkward wording. I do a lot better speaking and translating from romanian into english, but I wanted to use that template. Dalf | Talk 03:56, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • Thanks I almost put something on User:Bogdangiusca's page but figured I would wait and see what you said. I am going to be refresing my Romanian in thenext few months I hope, at one time I was able to pass myself off as Romanian in short conversations (though never written; much easier to reword and sound natural when speaking) Dalf | Talk 05:31, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I answered your question on my talk page ... not sure what the protocol is for such conersations. Dalf | Talk 06:02, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The Categories for Jews

Hi, see the {{vfd}} ("Vote for Deletion") concerning the various sub-categories for Jewish people at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion#Re:Sub-Categories of Jewish people [6]. This is an attempt to reign in the proliferation of Jews' categories. What do you think? Thank you. IZAK 10:26, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

another dubious category

See this: Category:Mafia associates I happened to notice it because it was added to Frank Sinatra, which was on my watchlist. I have not the slightest doubt that Sinatra had Mob friends, but should Wikipedia be in the business of passing this kind of judgment? -- Viajero 18:18, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Well, for better or worse, I have listed it on CfD. -- Viajero 17:53, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Final IWC judging

Thanks for your early jump on the writing contest judging. If you have more detailed thoughts on how to rank your favorites, we should agree on a top 5 or so. I'm going to meet with sannse and dysprosia on IRC tomorrow morning at 0900 UTC; perhaps we can chat before then? The Germans will come out with a press release sometime next week highlighting the winner in each language (de - Sachenross ); they are, as usual, terribly excited about the whole affair. Cheers, +sj + 12:39, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)

It is done! WP:IWC has the gory details. Diamond had to be honorable-mentioned; the rest are all I think as it should be. Thanks again, and congrats on your new gig btw... +sj + 05:16, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Category talk:Lists of Jews

Apparently User:Islamist does not consider secular Jews to be Jew; perhaps you might want to present an alternative viewpoint at Category talk:Lists of Jews. Jayjg (talk) 13:14, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Neruda

Hi, user TDC just added a substantial amount of material to Pablo Neruda highlighting his Stalinist sympathies, including a long quote from his ode to Stalin. It seems perverse to me to quote this work, which is not considered one of his best, solely to score political points. As I contemplate how best to tackle the problem, I was wondering whether you have any ideas. I realize you don't have much time these days, so I am not expecting direct action or anything. -- Viajero 21:22, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

This morning I had a go at it; I created a separate section on his Stalinist activities and condensed the material down to three paragraphs, removing that long excerpt from the odious ode. If you think I went too far, I'd rather hear it from you than from TDC when he returns from his latest 24-hour ban. I still feel the article needs substantial work, but it will have to wait until someone comes along who has a deeper affinity for and knowledge of the subject than I do. -- Viajero 09:43, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Sigh... all my work has been undone by you-know-who, without any effort at dialog on the Talk page. Bah! -- Viajero 00:50, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Update: he did leave a glib flourish just now on the Talk page. Less than helpful. -- Viajero 01:08, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Mendele Mocher Sforim

you said:

Actually, we DO need to link day/month part of day even if it's O.S.: That's the only way the wiki is smart enough to choose between US and UK style

could you please elaborate? why would someone want to have a link for O.S. date? e.g. December 21 refers to "the 355th day of the year in the Gregorian Calendar"; moreover, all the dates listed on this page refer to the N.S. (Gregorian) dates. Ktotam 02:49, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

A Note of Thanks

I just wanted to leave you a note of thanks for all of your help with my entries on the Oscar Wilde page. He has been of interest to me since I saw Vincent Price's portrayal of him in 1978, and thus, the biggest of my entries on this marvelous website have been about Oscar. It has been fun learning the ways of Wikipedia over the last few weeks and your help is much appreciated. Good Luck on the writing project you have just started.MarnetteD | Talk 15:46, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Catalonia is not Spain

Regarding Jorge Luis Borges' Catalan heritage, let me point out:

  1. Spanish is not a race.
  2. Catalan is not a race either, even if some marginal Renaixença writer believed that.
  3. Even if #2 were true (which it is not), how is this relevant to Borges' bio? Did he speak Catalan at home? Did he cherish his Catalan heritage?

If there were no positive answers to #3, I'd believe that it is just a POV loaded trivia and should be deleted.

> . If an American had both New Englander and Southern ancestry, I'd be liable to mention that, on the same grounds.
Certainly, but it wouldn't be stated as American and New Englander :-) Castillian and Catalan, or Asturian and Catalan would be fine.
Regarding the hypothetic Basque alternative, I have to admit that I almost mention that as a true nationality, but I recanted it at the last minute.

Listing Atricles in categories and sub-categories

I just posted to the talk page on Wikipedia_talk:Categorization#Super_Categories a short thing giving my understanding/opnion of this issues. My post starts Here. If you have a minute at some point could you look at what I wrote and let me know if you think I am on crack. I saw you were involved in the discussion there. Thanks Dalf | Talk 02:23, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • Friendly for sure .... I have had significant difficulties with spelling well ... forever .... I am not at all touchy about it, though I suppose I shoudl be more ..... carful and check myself. When things are more formal I usually cute and paste from something with a spelling checker. Perhaps I will start doing that on talk pages here. Dalf | Talk 06:29, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • actually I will spell check it now :) Though I still wont be offended if I miss some stuff, or even if the wording as bad and someone feels like changing thigns around as long as the basic meanning is there ..... after reading more of that talk page, I am not sure it will do any good either way. It looks like this is an almost intractable issue. Dalf | Talk 06:35, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I ran it through a spell checker, then I ran it through a diffrent spellchecker. I have even learned that Tunderbird's spellchecker is crap and OpenOffice.org's is pretty good. I was going to add some more examples but I thought that would make the idea cluttered rather than more clear. There are lots of examples on that talk page in other peoples comments anyway that would fall in the same framework. Even my spelling is not usually as bad as that was ... *sigh* oh well.
