Veraguas


Veraguas is a province of Panama. The capital is the city of Santiago de Veraguas.

The province is divided in 12 districts.

The province of Veraguas is located to Central-West of the Republic of Panama. It has 10,677.2 km2; and is divided in twelve districts (Atalaya, Calobre, Cañazas, La Mesa, Las Palmas, Montijo, Río de Jesus, San Francisco, Santa Fé, Santiago, Soná and Mariato).

Its capital Santiago, founded in 1636, is one of the cities of great economic growth in the country.

It is said that its name comes from the indigenous word Veracua or Viragua and this is the only province in Panama that has coasts in both seas.

At this place you can find a great variety of flora and fauna, as well as traditions, artisans, customs and legends.

Veraguas, have many groups of inhabitats, mainly of spanish-indian origin named campesinos. In the 20ª century, people came here from Italy, Lebanon, Popular China,Spain,India, and made their lives with their families here, making a living mainly with commerce. This land offers to the visitor a close contact with the nature, forests, mountains, coasts and islands where there are more than 200 varieties of orchids; more than 400 species of birds, besides mammals, reptiles and insects.

In the sea, you will find beaches such as Playa Santa Catalina, one of best in America for the practice of surfing and Playa Mariato, Malena and Torio.

Veraguas have various national parks like Coiba National Park, (with the largest coral reef of the Pacific Coast of America), Cerro Hoya National Park (covers the southwest part of the Azuero península and the sea that sorrounds it), Santa Fe National Park (a wonderful virgin forest in the north of the province), La Yeguada Forest reserve (with a great artificial lake for the production of electricity)and El Montuoso Forest reserve (witn a virgin forest too.)

Calobre have natural thermal waters that give the privilege to visitor of enjoying this sources with curative properties.

A province like Veraguas, feels proud to welcome visitors and show its more intimate enchantments.
