Veritas
In Roman mythology, Veritas ("truth") was the goddess of truth and a daughter of Saturn.
Veritas is also the name given to the virtue of truthfulness, which was considered one of the main virtues any good Roman should possess.
The words has since been used for many purposes, including the following:
- Asteroid 490 Veritas .
- Operation Veritas, the codename for UK military operations against the Taliban government of Afghanistan in 2001.
- Veritas is the name of South Africa's annual wine competition, organised by the South African National Wine Show Association (SANW). Winning wines display a gold seal on their bottles.
- Founded in 1989, Veritas Software is a corporation providing storage management and recovery software solutions. The company is based in Mountain View, Santa Clara County, California.
- DNV or Det norske veritas, established in 1864, DNV is an independent foundation with the objective of safeguarding life, property, and the environment. It is a leading international provider of services for managing risk.
- Veritas is the motto of Harvard University.
- VERITAS, or the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System, is a high-energy astrophysics telescope located on Kitt Peak in southern Arizona.
- Veritas is also the name of a defunct Formula One constructor.
- Veritas is a British political party, founded by Robert Kilroy-Silk following his resignation from UKIP in 2005.
