Vorta

The Vorta are a fictional humanoid species in Star Trek.

The Vorta were created to serve the Founders of the Dominion in administrative tasks. They are typically employed as diplomats or as officers charged with managing Jem'Hadar battalions. They worship the Founders as gods.

Physiology

Vorta are bipedal mammals. They are white with black hair and blue eyes. They have good hearing, poor eyesight, and are immune to most forms of poison. The Vorta also have a very poorly developed sense of taste. About the only things they can taste is certain food items from their homeworlds.

The Vorta mainly reproduce by cloning. It is believed that the Vorta loyalty to the Founders is genetic - that the loyalty had been built into their genetic makeup by the Founders. As there are both male and female Vorta, it's unclear if they could still reproduce through sexual reproduction. One single telepathic Vorta has been seen, but it is believed that this was an exception.

Vorta also have a suicide device implanted within them. If a Vorta is given an order to commit suicide, he or she will activate the device, which would kill that particular Vorta within a matter of minutes.

Vorta History

Little is known about the history of the Vorta. They have a legend that they were once a primitive ape-like species, until a Founder crashed on their planet. The Vorta helped the Founder and in turn the Founder promised that they would one day be an important part of a great empire. The Founders then helped the Vorta through genetic manipulation. But with no independent verification of the story, the possibility does exist that the story is a propaganda piece.
