WKBN-TV launched the channel in 1998, giving the Mahoning Valley their own Fox affiliate instead of relying on Pittsburgh affiliate WPGH-TV and Cleveland affiliate WJW. WFXI-CA is a low-powered satellite channel so that it could simucast WYFX-LP, which itself is a low-powered channel, in Pennsylvania. Hence the name, "Fox 17/62." WYFX is owned by Piedmont Television and is sister stations with WKBN in Youngstown.
