WOR-FM
Radio station WOR-FM was signed on the air in New York in 1966. Initially as a progressive rock station. It was owned by RKO General. The call letters were changed to WXLO (99X) in 1973 and then to WRKS (Urban Contemporary 98.7 KISS-FM) in August 1981. Its ratings went from 22nd place to 3rd. KISS FM was the first station in the New York market to play hip hop music regularly. It continued to play rap until December 1994 when Emmis Broadcasting purchased the station from the Summit Communications Group. Now the station plays Urban Adult Contemporary music targeting the 25-54 year-old audience.
