Channel 11 went on the air in 1957 as WIIC-TV, and was immediately an NBC affiliate, the channel's current affiliation. In 1981, the channel was bought by Cox Broadcasting, and the call signs were changed to WPXI-TV--Pittsburgh 11 (XI is the Roman numeral sign for 11.). The channel went to cable in 1994 with the launch of PCNC--the Pittsburgh Cable News Channel--so that it could bring Pittsburgh its first 10 PM News, which it now competes with KDKA-TV (through WNPA-TV) and WPGH-TV.
