First created as an independent religious-oriented station, WXAO, in 1980, the station moved away from religious programming and later changed calls to WNFT (North Florida Television). WNFT became Jacksonville's UPN affiliate in 1995. The affiliate's call letters were changed to WTEV later that year.
In April 2002, The Florida Times-Union reported that WTEV would switch to airing CBS programming. The former CBS affiliate, WJXT, moved to independent programming after 51 years, after not being able to come to a new affiliation agreement with CBS.
WTEV officially became a CBS affiliate on July 15, 2002. Since then, UPN programming has been shown on Jacksonville's FOX affiliate, WAWS, after prime time FOX programming. WAWS is also owned by Clear Channel Communications.
