Walmington-on-Sea
Walmington-on-Sea was a fictional seaside resort where the BBCtv comedy series, BBC radio series and film Dad's Army was based. Clearly located on the channel coast of England it would have been either in Kent or Sussex. The series concerned the adventures and misadventures of a volunteer army home defence unit during World War II and they were seen to wear cap badges including "Invicta", the white horse of Kent, thus suggesting the former.
Outdoor for the TV scenes were filmed at Thetford, an inland town of Norfolk so giving no clue to the scriptwriters' preference. The film moved it to the Chalfonts, even further from the coast.
Walmington-on-Sea certainly had a pleasure pier and a retail outlet selling sweets - The "Novelty Rock Emporium" - as well as at least one bank, butcher's shop, greengrocer's and undertaker's so suggesting it was a reasonable sized place.
