Walter Abish

Walter Abish (born December 24 1931) is a famous Jewish-American author.

Abish was born in Vienna, Austria. At a young age, his family fled from the Nazis, travelling to Italy and Nice before settling in Shanghai from 1940 to 1948. From there the family moved to Israel, staying there for a decade, and then to the United States.

Abish received the PEN/Faulkner Award in 1981 for his book How German Is It?. He has also received the Guggenheim Followship and the MacArthur Followship .
