Wappinger, New York
Wappinger is a town of located in Dutchess County, New York in the USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 26,274. The name is derived from the Wappani Indians that inhabited the area.
The Town of Wappinger is located in the southern part of the county.
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 26,274 people, 9,793 households, and 6,992 families residing in the town. The population density is 372.0/km² (963.3/mi²). There are 10,144 housing units at an average density of 143.6/km² (371.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 86.18% White, 4.96% African American, 0.24% Native American, 4.29% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.44% from other races, and 1.88% from two or more races. 7.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 9,793 households out of which 34.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.1% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 23.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.17.
In the town the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $58,079, and the median income for a family is $66,273. Males have a median income of $49,007 versus $31,444 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,817. 4.1% of the population and 3.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
