West Virginia Wesleyan College
West Virginia Wesleyan College is a small college in Buckhannon, West Virginia. It has about 1,500 students.
The school was founded in 1890 by the Methodist church in reaction to programatic changes at West Virginia University with which the church, then the largest religious group in the state, disagreed. It was originally known as the West Virginia Conference Seminary, and operated at the sub-college level. It became a college level institution in 1900 and renamed itself the Methodist University of West Virginia in 1905, however the use of the term university by a school so small was improper and the college assumed its current name in 1906.
Today the school continues as a residential liberal arts small college. The primary majors are teacher education, business, and religious ministry.
In athletics, the schools teams are the Bobcats and the school competes in the NCAA Division II West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
