What's Eating Gilbert Grape

What's Eating Gilbert Grape is a 1993 movie directed by Lasse Hallström. It stars Johnny Depp, Juliette Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio. It is based on a book by author Peter Hedges .

Plot

Dedicated to his mentally backward brother and reclusive, overweight mother, grocery worker Gilbert Grape (played by Johnny Depp) rethinks his life after meeting a young woman passing through town. With Gilbert's father dead and his mother unable to care for her children, Gilbert takes responsibilty for both his bother and repairing the old house. Gilbert's brother climbed the town's water tower several times. On one of these occasions, Gilbert convinced the police not to put his brother in jail. The town changed in several ways during the film. The first was the opening of Burger Barn, a fast-food restaurant. The second was the opening of the Foodland supermarket, which caused the owner's of the local grocery store to fear that all of their customers would go to Foodland, mentioning their fresh lobsters. In all, this film shows changes both withnin Gilbert's family and the town that they live in.

In contrast to many films, this film depicts an average American small-town life.

Depp and DiCaprio received critical acclaim for their work in this picture, with DiCaprio receiving Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actor for his work.
