Wheatland County is a county located in the state of Montana. As of 2000, the population is 2,259. Its county seat is Harlowton⁶.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,699 km² (1,428 mi²). 3,686 km² (1,423 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 2,259 people, 853 households, and 540 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 1,154 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.99% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.22% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 853 households out of which 25.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.80% are married couples living together, 4.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.60% are non-families. 34.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 22.00% from 25 to 44, 25.50% from 45 to 64, and 19.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.20 males.
