Wikia

Wikia is an incorporated company which was founded by Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, in 2004.

Wikia manages Wikicities, a collection of over 250 wiki communities, and hosts Memory Alpha, a Star Trek encyclopedia.

Wikiasari is a project run by Wikia to create a copyleft search engine. The search engine uses wiki-style software, allowing users to add, remove or modify listings. The project replaced 3Apes in March 2004. This earlier project, which started in September 2002, had been a directory-style search engine. Jimmy Wales stated that one of the aims of the search engine was to "prove that the organizational model of Wikipedia can be applied effectively to search". Sites are categorized by keywords assigned by users, and by ratings of "adult" or "family". Quality ratings and language can also be assigned. Wikiasari's database of links are available under a copyleft license, and the software it runs on under the GNU General Public License.
