William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire

William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire (April 27,1808December 21, 1891), was the great-grandson of the 4th duke and grandson of the 1st Earl of Burlington, whom he succeeded in that title in 1834, before succeeding his cousin in the Dukedom in 1858. In 1829, he married a niece of the 6th duke, Lady Blanche Howard (1812 - 1840), daughter of the Earl of Carlisle. He endowed the Cavendish Laboratory, named after his relative Henry Cavendish.

Cavendish's three sons became Members of Parliament: Spencer, MP for Lancashire North 1857-91, led the Liberal Party and was asked three times to be Prime Minister by Queen Victoria; Frederick was MP for the West Riding and Chief Secretary for Ireland, assassinated in 1882; Edward was MP for Derbyshire West.
