William Paul Quinn
William Paul Quinn (1788-1873) was the fourth bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Quinn was born in Calcutta, India. He was at the organization of the AME Church in 1816, ordained a deacon in 1818, and an elder in 1838. The General Conference of the church elected him a bishop on May 19, 1844. He became the Senior Bishop of the church in May of 1849 and served until his death in Richmond, Indiana, on February 3, 1873. Bishop Quinn was married to Mary Jane Quinn.
Paul Quinn College (founded 1872), the oldest African-American liberal arts college in Texas, was named after him.
