William Tilghman

William Tilghman (1756-1827) was an American lawyer, jurist and statesman from Maryland. He served as the Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court from 1805 to 1827.

Biographic and service outline:

  • Born August 12, 1756 in Talbot County, Maryland
  • nephew of Matthew Tilghman, brother of Tench Tilghman
  • College of Philadelphia, now the University of Pennsylvania (1772)
  • lawyer (admitted to MD bar in 1783).
  • MD House of Delegates 1788-1790
  • MD Constitutional Convention 1788
  • MD Presidential elector 1789
  • MD Senate 1791-1793
  • moved to Philadelphia 1793
  • US District court judge - Pennsylvania 1801-1802
  • Judge of common pleas, Philadelphia 1804 (certain, but full dates unknown)
  • Chief Justice PA Supreme Court 1805-1827
  • In 1811 ran for Governor , lost to Simon Snyder
  • Associations: American Philosophical Society (president 1824-27)
  • Died April 30, 1827 at Philadelphia, PA.
