York (disambiguation)

York is the name of a number of places around the world. It is also a surname (sometimes spelt Yorke), an English royal house, a dukedom and an archbishopric.

The original York is York, England, which derives its name from the Viking Jorvik. The city gives its name to the traditional county of Yorkshire, and hence also to the modern counties of North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire, and the region of Yorkshire and the Humber. It is the site of the University of York and the home of York City association football club.

The House of York was a fifteenth century dynasty of English kings. The Duke of York is a title traditionally given to a younger son of the English (and, later, British) monarch. Several notable historical figures have held this title; the current duke is Prince Andrew. The Archbishop of York is the junior of the two archbishops in the Church of England; the position is currently vacant following the resignation of Dr David Hope.

Several ships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS York.

The York Rite is a branch of freemasonry.
