Acidifying Our Oceans
Medium

We are releasing more and more carbon dioxide into our atmosphere, and some of it is being absorbed by our oceans. This is causing the pH levels of our oceans to drop, and if this continues, our oceans will become more acidic. Let's test this in an experiment!
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that increasing levels of carbon dioxide lowers the pH of water, making it more acidic.
Method & Materials
You will fill a water bottle with tap water, measure the pH level, blow air through a tube into the water for 3 minutes, measure the pH level again, replace the water, fit a plastic bag around a car exhaust pipe, insert a hose into the water, start the car and observe the air bubbles for 3 minutes, and measure the pH level again.
You will need an empty water bottle, tap water, two rubber hoses, an air-tight plastic bag, pH paper, a stop watch, masking tape, and a car that runs on gasoline.
Results
The results show that increasing the level of carbon dioxide in the water-filled bottle lowers the pH of the water, making it more acidic. This proves that our hypothesis is true.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting and unique because it shows how human activities are affecting our oceans in a very real way.
Also Consider
Variations of this experiment include using sea water instead of tap water, and increasing the time the air bubbles are blown to see if the results are different.
