Nasal Dilators and Snoring Reduction

Hard
Nasal Dilators and Snoring Reduction | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
Can a small adhesive strip on the nose reduce snoring? You record ten known snorers sleeping for eight hours each night over ten nights without a nasal dilator. Then you repeat the process for another ten nights with an external nasal dilator. You review the video each morning and time how many minutes each person spent snoring. The recordings show that the nasal dilator reduced snoring time for every participant. Some participants stopped snoring entirely. Compare the total snoring minutes with and without the dilator to measure its effect.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that the nasal dilator will help to reduce the snoring period of the participants.

Method & Materials

You will select 10 participants known to have snoring problems and record them while they sleep for 8 hours. The next day, you will time the number of hours that the participants spend snoring during the 8 hours of sleep. Then, you will give each of the 10 participants an external nasal dilator to use while sleeping and repeat the steps.
You will need a digital video camcorder that records directly to DVDs, 20 blank DVDs, 10 external nasal dilators, a DVD player, a television, and a stopwatch.

Results

The results show that using the nasal dilator was able to reduce the length of snoring time among the participants. Some participants were even able to stop snoring completely.

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting because it shows how a simple device like a nasal dilator can help reduce snoring and improve sleep quality.

Also Consider

Consider repeating the experiment by observing the number of time the participant tosses and turns during sleep with and without the nasal dilator. Also, compare the effectiveness of external use and internal use nasal dilators.
