Skateboard Bearing Quality and Roll Distance

Medium
Skateboard Bearing Quality and Roll Distance | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
Do expensive skateboard bearings really make a difference? Bearings reduce friction (the rubbing between moving parts) inside each wheel. Higher-precision bearings should produce less friction and let the board roll farther. You set up a ramp on a flat surface and release a skateboard from the same starting line every time. You swap in five different bearing sets, ranked from most to least expensive. Each set gets five runs, and you measure the distance from the ramp to where the board stops. The most expensive bearings average 5.38 meters. The cheapest average 3.40 meters. The pattern holds across all five brands: higher price means longer roll distance.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that the skateboard mounted with the most expensive bearings will travel the furthest.

Method & Materials

You will set up a ramp, mount different skateboard bearings on the skateboard, and measure the distance travelled by the skateboard from the ramp.
You will need a ramp, a skateboard with changeable bearings, five different sets of skateboard bearings, tools to change the skateboard bearings, a measuring tape, colored masking tape, and a long flat surface.

Results

The results of this experiment showed that the more expensive the cost of the bearing, the further the distance travelled by the skateboard. This proves that the hypothesis is true.

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting because it allows you to explore the science of skateboarding and how different bearings can affect the distance travelled by the skateboard.

Also Consider

Consider repeating this experiment with skateboards of different weights or designs. Also, consider how changing the wheel size affects the distance/speed of a skateboard.
