What happens when you expose green bean seeds to X-rays before planting them? A short burst of radiation might help seeds sprout. A long burst might stop them from growing at all. You give four groups of green bean seeds different X-ray exposure times. One group gets no radiation. The others get 1 second or 10 seconds or 100 seconds of exposure. Then you plant all four groups and measure their growth over eight days. The results reveal a surprising twist in how radiation affects germination.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that overexposure to X-rays will cause tissue damage and prevent green beans from germinating.

Method & Materials

You will expose green beans to X-rays and measure the height of the bean sprouts.
You will need an X-ray machine, 40 green beans, 4 pots, soil, a ruler, and water for the plants.

Results

The results showed that the green beans that were exposed to X-ray for 100 seconds did not germinate. However, the green beans that were given 1 second of X-ray exposure germinated and grew more quickly than the control beans without any radiation exposure.
