| This experiment was conducted to compare the thermal insulation properties of materials. The tests were done to compare the cooling rate of boiling water using air, sand and Styrofoam as insulators. | ||

| 1. For this experiment, the independent variable is the type of thermal insulator used – air, sand or styrofoam. The dependent variable is the temperature of the water in the conical flask. This is determined by using the thermometer to measure the temperature. The constants (control variables) are the size of the conical flask, the amount of water in the flask and the size of the wooden box. 2.
