Jar vs. Cloth Sprouting Methods
Medium
Which sprouting method works better for different seeds: a glass jar or a damp cloth? You sprout three types of seeds using both methods side by side:
- Mung beans
- Pinto beans
- Radish seeds
For the jar method you soak seeds in a wide-mouth canning jar. Drain and rinse two to three times per day. For the cloth method you spread soaked seeds between wet cotton washcloths in a flat bowl.
Record when roots first appear in each setup. Jars resist mold better for longer sprouts. Cloth handles direct sunlight and needs no drainage system.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that the jar method is more effective for sprouting different beans and seeds.
Method & Materials
You will measure out the appropriate amount of seed, visually inspect and remove stones, sticks, weed seed, broken seeds, etc. Then you will soak the seed in water for the appropriate time, rinse, and put in the sprouting environment for the appropriate time. Finally, you will rinse the seeds and store them until ready to use.
You will need seed for sprouting, bug-proof containers, wide-mouth glass canning jars, screen lids, and 100% cotton washcloths.

The results showed that the jar method is more effective for sprouting different beans and seeds. The jar method is more versatile and less likely to mold than the cloth method.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it is a fun and easy way to grow your own food. It is also unique because it compares two different methods of sprouting to see which is more effective.
Also Consider
Experiment variations to consider include sprouting different types of beans and seeds, and using different soaking and sprouting times.
