Soil Pollution Science Fair Project

Nitrate Leaching by Fertilizers

Nitrate Leaching by Fertilizers | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
Do you want to know how different types of fertilizers affect the nitrate content in runoff water? This science project will explore the nitrate leaching of organic and inorganic fertilizers.

The hypothesis is that the runoff water of soil containing inorganic fertilizer will have the highest nitrate content.

Method & Materials

You will need to prepare 4 pots with different types of fertilizers, plant carpet grass, and water the grass for 3 days. Then, you will use a nitrate test kit to measure the nitrate content in the runoff water.
You will need 4 pots, pot trays, soil, carpet grass, cow manure, compost, liquid inorganic fertilizer, granule inorganic fertilizer, tap water, and a nitrate test kit.

The results showed that the runoff water of the pot using the inorganic fertilizer had the highest levels of nitrate. This proves that the hypothesis was correct.

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting because it explores how different types of fertilizers can affect the nitrate content in runoff water. It also shows how nitrate contamination can be harmful to the environment.

Also Consider

Variations of this science project could include testing different types of soils, such as clay, sand, and loam. Another variation could be to compare the nitrate levels of different types of organic and inorganic fertilizers.
