Baseball Hitting Distance: Indoors vs. Outdoors
Hard
Does playing inside a stadium change how far a batter can hit a baseball? You have 10 batters each hit five pitched balls in an indoor stadium. Then the same batters repeat the test outdoors. You measure the farthest hit from each batter in both locations.
The results show no major difference in distance between indoor and outdoor hits. The stadium type does not appear to affect batting performance.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that baseball batters will hit a baseball further in an outdoor stadium than in an indoor stadium.
Method & Materials
You will have 10 baseball batters hit a baseball 5 times each in an indoor and outdoor stadium. You will measure the distance traveled by the baseball and record the results.
You will need an outdoor baseball stadium, an indoor baseball stadium, 10 baseball batters, 1 baseball pitcher, 10 baseball bats and 1 baseball glove for the pitcher, 2 dozen baseballs, 1 set of baseball safety gear for the batter and 1 set of baseball safety gear for the pitcher, a measuring tape, and an assistant.
Results
The results showed that there was no significant difference in the distance traveled by the ball when batted in the indoor or outdoor stadium. The hypothesis was disproved.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it shows that the type of stadium does not affect how far a baseball can be hit.
Also Consider
Variations of this project could include comparing the performance of batters at higher or lower altitudes, or testing how air temperature affects how a baseball travels.
