Think of it this way
Bread mold starts as a few tiny spots on a slice left in a warm, damp bag. Given enough warmth and moisture, those spots spread and cover the whole slice. Algae works the same way in a bowl of water by a sunny window. A few green cells grow into a thick green layer when the water stays warm and bright.
