Amplitude
Amplitude is how far a sound wave or light wave moves from its resting point.
Think of it this way
A bowl of water sits on a table. Drop a small pebble in, and the water rises and falls a short way. Drop a big rock in, and the water heaves up and down much more. That distance from the flat resting point is amplitude.
Explaining amplitude by grade level
Think about a guitar string. When you pluck it hard, it moves a long way back and forth. That big movement makes a loud sound. When you pluck it gently, it barely moves, and the sound is soft and quiet.
