Cross-Reactivity
Cross-Reactivity is when your body reacts to one food because it looks like something else you are allergic to.
Think of it this way
Your body's immune system acts like a security guard checking ID cards. A peanut protein has a certain shape, like a card with a specific pattern. Tree nuts have proteins with a similar pattern. The guard sees the tree nut card, thinks it matches the banned peanut card, and triggers the alarm.
Explaining cross-reactivity by grade level
Some people sneeze around tree pollen. Then they bite an apple and their mouth feels itchy. Their body gets mixed up. It thinks the apple is the same as the pollen.
