Damping
Damping is how a moving object slowly loses energy and comes to rest.
Think of it this way
A spoon taps the side of a glass bowl. The bowl rings loudly at first. The sound fades slowly until the bowl is silent. That loss of sound is the energy leaving the bowl as damping.
Explaining damping by grade level
Push a swing and let go. It goes back and forth, but each time it moves a little less. Soon it stops. That slowing down is damping. A shock absorber on a car does the same thing. It has small holes that slow the bounce down.
