Earthquakes
Earthquakes are sudden shaking of the ground caused by rocks slipping along a crack in the earth.
Think of it this way
Stack two flat books on a table. Press your hands on them and push sideways until they slip past each other. That sudden slip makes both books jump and shake. Deep underground, rock layers do the same thing along a crack called a fault.
Explaining earthquakes by grade level
Push two books flat on a table so their edges press hard. Keep pushing until one book jumps past the other. That sudden jump shakes the table. The ground does the same thing when big rocks deep below get stuck and then slip free.
