Eutrophication
Eutrophication is when too much plant food gets into a lake or pond and makes algae grow out of control.

Soap and yard care products can wash into ponds. These hold plant food that algae love to eat. The algae grow so thick they block the light. When the algae die, they use up the air in the water.
