Magnetometer is a tool that measures how strong or which way a magnetic field points.

Think of it this way

Stick a magnet on your fridge and feel it grab the door. Move it to a thin spot and the pull feels weak. Move it to a thick spot and the pull feels strong. A magnetometer is a tool that does this same job, but it reads the pull as a number on a screen.
