Perimeter

Perimeter is the total distance around the outside edge of any flat shape.

Think of it this way

A kitchen cutting board is a flat rectangle. The perimeter is the total length of all four edges around it. If you ran a piece of string along every edge and then measured that string, you would have the perimeter.

Explaining perimeter by grade level

Think about walking around a shape drawn on the ground. You start at one corner and walk along each side. When you get back to where you started, that whole walk is the perimeter. Bigger shapes take more steps to walk around.

Polygon Sides and Pi Estimation Error

Ancient mathematicians estimated pi by drawing polygons inside and around circles, then measuring the total distance around each shape. You do the same: average the perimeters of polygons inscribed in and circumscribed about a circle to get your pi estimate. As you increase the number of sides, each perimeter traces the circle's edge more closely, and the estimate improves. When you test six different polygon pairs and track how the error ratio changes, a clear pattern emerges — the error shrinks in a predictable way as the side count grows.
