Rational and Irrational Numbers is how we sort numbers by whether they can be written as a simple fraction or not.
Think of it this way
A kitchen tray holds two types of measuring cups. Some cups have neat fraction marks like 1/2 or 3/4, showing exact amounts you can write down. Other cups hold amounts that never fit a clean fraction, no matter how hard you try to measure. The marked cups are rational numbers, and the cups that never settle are irrational numbers.
Explaining rational and irrational numbers by grade level
Think about a ball rolling on a pool table. Some angles send the ball right into a corner pocket. Other angles make the ball bounce and bounce and never land in a pocket. Numbers work the same way. Some are neat and tidy, and some go on with no end.
