Saturated and Unsaturated Fats

Saturated and unsaturated fats are two types of fat that differ in how their carbon atoms bond together.

Think of it this way

A tray holds two kinds of short sticks — some straight, some with a bend in the middle. The straight sticks stack flat with no gaps, just like saturated fats pack close and stay solid. The bent sticks cannot lie flat or pack tight, just like unsaturated fats stay loose and liquid.

Explaining saturated and unsaturated fats by grade level

Some fats are solid at room temperature, like butter. Other fats are liquid, like cooking oil. You can test this by rubbing each one on paper. The liquid fat soaks in more and leaves a bigger see-through spot.
