Seismic Engineering is the craft of building homes and bridges that stay safe when the ground shakes.
Think of it this way
A bowl of gelatin sits on a table. When you shake the table, the gelatin jiggles and bends but does not break apart. Engineers build homes the same way, with flexible joints and soft layers that soak up the shake. Rigid objects on the gelatin would crack and tip, while the bowl itself stays whole.

When the ground shakes hard, houses can fall down. Builders use wood to help keep homes safe. Wood bends but does not snap. That helps the house stay up.
