Seismic Waves

Seismic Waves is the shaking that moves through the ground when rocks slip or break.

Think of it this way

A bowl of water sits on a table. When you tap the side of the bowl, waves spread out from the tap point to the far wall. The water moves up and down as the wave passes through. Rock does the same thing when it breaks — the shake spreads out in all directions from the break point.

Explaining seismic waves by grade level

When rocks deep down slip, the ground shakes. That shaking does not stay in one spot. It spreads out from the break. Think of how a clap moves through the air. The shaking goes through rock the same way. Far from the slip, it gets weaker.
