Vocal Cords

Vocal Cords are two small folds in your throat that vibrate when air passes through to make sound.

Think of it this way

Hold a rubber band at both ends and stretch it slightly. The band forms a narrow gap in the middle. Blow air past that gap and the band vibrates, making a buzzing sound. Pull the ends farther apart and the band stretches tighter, the buzz gets higher. Your vocal cords work the same way: two flat folds held close together.

Explaining vocal cords by grade level

You have two thin flaps in your throat. When you breathe out, air makes them shake. That shaking makes your voice. Cold water can make them tight, which changes how you sound.
