Drumstick Material and Rebound Height

Medium
Drumstick Material and Rebound Height | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
Does the material a drumstick is made from change how high it bounces off a snare drum? You set up four pairs of drumsticks made from titanium, aluminum, hickory, and oak. All four pairs are the same length and diameter. A pulley and weight system strikes each drumstick against the drum with equal force. You record the rebound height on camera five times per drumstick. The wooden sticks -- hickory and oak -- bounce higher than the metal ones.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that the drumsticks that are made from oak and hickory will produce higher rebounds as compared to those that are made from titanium and aluminium.

Method & Materials

You will set up the experiment with a video camera, drumstick and graph paper in a straight line to measure the rebound height. You will also need a snare drum, a pulley with a string, a stand to support the drumsticks, and a weight that weighs 1 kilogramme.
You will need a pair of titanium drumsticks (17 inches long, 0.625 inches in diameter), a pair of aluminum drumsticks (17 inches long, 0.625 inches diameter), a pair of hickory drumsticks (17 inches long, 0.625inches in diameter), and a pair of oak drumsticks (17 inches long, 0.625 inches in diameter).

Results

The results show that the wooden drumsticks made from hickory and oak have a higher rebound than those made from titanium and aluminum.

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting because it allows us to compare the rebound of different types of drumsticks and see which one produces the highest rebound.

Also Consider

Experiment variations to consider include using weights of different weights, different types of drums, and drumsticks that are made of different thickness.
