Recycled Water and Radish Growth
Easy
Does recycled water help plants grow faster than tap or distilled water? Recycled water may contain dissolved minerals that act like a mild fertilizer. This project puts that idea to the test.
You divide 15 radish plants into three groups of five. One group gets distilled water. Another gets tap water. The third gets recycled water. You measure the average height each week for four weeks.
By the end, you compare the growth rates to see which water source produced the tallest plants.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that radish plants will grow more quickly when watered with recycled water.
Method & Materials
You will separate 15 radish plants into 3 groups of 5 pots each. Label the pots as “distilled”, “tap” and “recycled”. Place the pots in a location where they receive the same amount of sunlight and water them once a day with the same amount of water.
You will need 15 potted radish plants of almost the same height, distilled water, tap water, recycled water, a ruler, and a black marker pen.

The results showed that plants that were watered with recycled water grew more quickly than the other plants, during the 4 weeks of observation.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it shows how recycled water can be used to help conserve fresh water resources and promote plant growth.
Also Consider
Consider repeating the experiment using different types of plants, or comparing the rate of seed germination when recycled water is used.
