Ginger Candy and Motion Sickness
Medium
Does eating ginger candy help you walk a straight line after spinning in circles? Spinning 20 times makes most people dizzy and unsteady. Ginger has long been used as a remedy for motion sickness.
You have 10 participants walk a chalk line before and after spinning 20 times. Then they eat ginger candy and repeat the spinning test 30 minutes later. You time each walk to measure steadiness.
Compare the walk times to see if ginger candy reduces the effects of dizziness.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that eating ginger candy helps to reduce the effect of motion sickness.
Method & Materials
You will need 10 participants, a 5 meter long straight sidewalk, a box of chalk, a measuring tape, a stopwatch, and a bag of ginger candy. Participants will walk the line, spin around, and then walk the line again after eating ginger candy.
You will need 10 participants, a 5 meter long straight sidewalk, a box of chalk, a measuring tape, a stopwatch, and a bag of ginger candy.
Results
The results showed that all the participants were able to walk the line more quickly after eating the ginger candy. This proves that the hypothesis that eating ginger candy helps to reduce the effect of motion sickness is true.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it shows how a simple food item can have a positive effect on motion sickness.
Also Consider
Experiment variations could include using ginger beer, ginger tea, or ginger pickles instead of ginger candy. Another variation could be to compare the effects of ginger on male and female participants.
