Seed Sprouting on a Paper Towel
Easy
How does a dry seed turn into a living plant? You place seeds from your kitchen on a damp paper towel. Within a few days, roots and tiny shoots begin to appear.
This method lets you watch germination (the moment a seed starts to grow) happen right before your eyes. Once the sprouts are large enough, you can move them into soil and continue to observe their growth.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that seeds from the kitchen will sprout and grow when provided with water and the right conditions.
Science Concepts Learned
Germination
A seed needs water to swell and sprout. You place dry seeds on a damp paper towel. Roots and tiny shoots appear in a few days.
Method & Materials
You will collect various dry seeds from your kitchen, place them on a wet paper towel, and keep them in a clear bag near a sunny window. Over a few days, you'll observe the seeds sprouting roots and leaves. Then, you can plant them in soil and watch them grow even more!
You will need seeds from your kitchen (such as corn kernels, dry beans, and nuts), a paper towel, water, a clear plastic bag, and optionally, potting soil and pots.

When water and sunlight was given to the seeds from the kitchen, they sprouted and grew into seedlings. The most exciting observation was seeing the roots emerge first, followed by the appearance of green leaves.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it allows you to witness the amazing transformation of dry seeds into living plants. You'll learn about the importance of water in plant growth and get hands-on experience gardening right from your kitchen.
Also Consider
1. Compare the growth of seeds placed in different locations (e.g., sunny window, dark cupboard) to see how light affects their growth.
2. Investigate the impact of different amounts of water on seed germination by varying the moisture in the paper towel.
