Human Anatomy is the study of the body and its parts, like bones, muscles, and organs. By learning about our anatomy, we can understand how our bodies work and stay healthy!

The purpose of this experiment is to show the kidneys ability to alter the output of urine in response to the ingestion of different liquids such as tap water, isotonic saline (gatorade or any other sport drink), and coffee. Various fluids affect the kidney in different ways. My hypothesis states that coffee will cause the kidneys to excrete urine more frequently than the other fluids consumed in this experiment. This experiment is very helpful in daily life as I think about what fluids ingested cause more frequent trips to the restroom.

How does the type of fluid you drink change what comes out in your urine? Your kidneys adjust urine volume and makeup based on what you take in.

You drink tap water and collect a urine sample. Then you repeat with a salt solution and again with coffee. For each sample you measure pH and color. You also check specific gravity (how concentrated the urine is).

Tap water passes through quickly and produces pale urine. Salt delays water release and makes urine darker. Coffee speeds things up because caffeine acts directly on the kidneys.
