Fluids and Urine Composition

Medium
Fluids and Urine Composition | Science Fair Projects | STEM Projects
How does the type of fluid you drink change what comes out in your urine? Your kidneys adjust urine volume and makeup based on what you take in. You drink tap water and collect a urine sample. Then you repeat with a salt solution and again with coffee. For each sample you measure pH and color. You also check specific gravity (how concentrated the urine is). Tap water passes through quickly and produces pale urine. Salt delays water release and makes urine darker. Coffee speeds things up because caffeine acts directly on the kidneys.

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that the ingestion of different types of fluids will affect the amount of urine produced and the pH, color, and specific gravity of the urine.

Method & Materials

You will measure the amount of urine produced and the pH, color, and specific gravity of the urine after ingesting different types of fluids.
You will need a measuring cup, a pH meter, a colorimeter, and a hydrometer.

Results

The results of this experiment show that the ingestion of different types of fluids affects the amount of urine produced and the pH, color, and specific gravity of the urine. The most notable observation is that the ingestion of coffee is quickly followed by the rapid elimination of urine as a result of the effect of caffeine on the kidney.

Why do this project?

This science project is interesting and unique because it explores how different types of fluids affect our kidneys, which is an important part of our body's homeostasis.

Also Consider

Experiment variations to consider include testing different types of fluids, such as juice or soda, and testing the effects of different concentrations of the same type of fluid.
