Magnets and Radish Seedling Growth
Medium
Do magnets pull a growing plant off course? You plant six radish seeds in each of three clay pots. Pot A has a magnet at the bottom beneath the soil. Pot B has a magnet on top of the soil. Pot C has no magnet.
All three pots sit under the same grow light on the same watering schedule. Once the seedlings reach eight centimeters you measure how far each stem leans from vertical.
The stems in pots A and B bend toward the magnet. The stems in pot C grow in random directions. The magnets affect stem direction but not root growth.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis is that the stem of each plant will be attracted to the magnet.
Method & Materials
You will gather materials, place magnets in the pots, plant the radish seeds, water the plants, and measure the growth of the plants.
You will need clay pots, a light reflector, permanent magnets, potting soil, radish seeds, a grow light, a carpenter's level, and a measuring cup.
Results
The results of the experiment showed that magnets do have an effect on the growth of radish seedlings, but the method used to measure them did not show this. The magnet had an effect on the plants because they were all facing the middle where the magnet was placed, but the roots did not change significantly from pot A and B to pot C.
Why do this project?
This science project is interesting because it explores the effects of magnetism on the growth of plants, which is something that is not often studied.
Also Consider
Variations to consider include using different types of magnets, different types of plants, and different types of soil.
